It is said that knitting has been originated in the Middle East, most probably in Egypt, around the 5th Century. The ancient knitted garments were made of natural fibers like cotton, wool, and silk. Some fragments of knitted fabric have been found in Eastern Syria in burial sites and a genuine knitted piece, dated 1000-1400 AD, has been found in Egypth. This is a men sock with a complex design in white and indigo cotton. The art of knitting might have been invented by the Egyptians to save time and energy in creating their garments to replace nail-binding fabric creation technique, that predates knitting and requires more time and special dexterity. Si dice che il lavoro a maglia abbia avuto origine in Medio Oriente, molto probabilmente in Egitto, all’incirca nel V secolo d.c. Gli antichi indumenti a maglia erano realizzati con fibre naturali come cotone, lana e seta. Alcuni frammenti di tessuto a maglia sono stati trovati nella Siria orientale in luoghi di sepoltura e in Egitto è stato trovato un calzino da uomo fatto a maglia con un articolato disegno in bianco e indaco datato 1000-1400 d.c. L'arte della lavorazione a maglia potrebbe essere stata inventata dagli Egiziani per risparmiare tempo ed energia nella creazione dei loro capi, in sostituzione della antichissima tecnica di creazione dei tessuti con le legature ad ago (Nalbinding). Quest’ultima è una tecnica che precede la lavorazione a maglia e uncinetto, ma richiede molto più tempo e una manualità speciale.
